Many people struggle with learning the game of golf and fail to understand what it really takes to get better. Most amateurs can easily learn to shoot in the low 80's and even occasionally break into the 70's on a really good day without having to spend all their time on the range. The key is to be smart about how you practice and make sure you are spending appropriate amounts of time on the short game.
Short game tips:
Most amateurs think that hitting the driver well is the key to lower scores. While there is no doubt that a straight and long drive makes the hole a lot easier to play the fact remains that if your wedges, chipping and putting is poor then you will never reduce your handicap regardless of how long or straight you drive the ball. If you allocate one hour to a practice session then you should spend 40 minutes on the short game and 20 minutes on the longer irons and driver. Start each practice session on the range with the wedge and work your way up slowly to the driver. If you watch most amateurs the first club they grab is the driver when they go to the range, this is a mistake so be sure to start with the wedge and work your way up.
Also be sure to spend time on the practice greens hitting chips, putts and bunker shots as these are critical to shooting lower scores. When it comes to chipping look for bare lies and even buried lies and learn to play well from those tough lies as this will make hitting shots on the course much easier as you will be ready for any situation.
